Residential AI Challenge

The pilot was successful in identifying five specific items with over 90% accuracy

This was an innovation challenge to seek a solution that will allow the City to generate data on avoidable food waste and incorrect sorting in the organic waste stream. The data allows for insights that can be communicated back to households while maintaining privacy. The goal is to increase the data points to make better decisions and test interventions. Using a specialized camera and the latest AI technology to detect items being dumped from green carts into the organics collection vehicle, the pilot was successful in identifying five specific items with over 90% accuracy. Our next step is to collaborate with a company that has AI technology with the capability to link the RFID tag on the organics cart to the street address which will be used to identify recycling contamination at the household level. Residents may then be informed of contaminants found along with a description of the program. The data gained can be used to design additional print and social media recycling campaigns.
